Larry Winnik
HANAUMA BAY
Larry Winnik retired from the Air Force after 25 years of service and lives in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. Living only 10 minutes from Hanauma Bay, he combined his love of snorkeling with his passion for underwater photography and, in retirement, became a daily early morning visitor to the Bay. He also volunteers as a docent with the Hanauma Bay Education Program and just completed his 31st year. He has amassed over 10,000 underwater photos of the multitude of bay critters and happily shares them on a weekly basis in his blog, Hanauma.blogspot.com.

Doug Sell
KAHALUʻU BAY
Doug grew up in Nebraska and served in the US Navy. He loved the ocean, sailing, snorkeling or just sitting on the beach watching whales in the wintertime. In 1967, he had an opportunity to move to Oʻahu to work for Comsat. In 1969, he met Bonnie and made her his wife, and they moved to the mainland the next year. They were in love with Hawaiʻi Island since their first trip there in 1970 and continued to visit twice a year. In 2001 they arrived “full time” with one suit case of clothing, one of snorkel gear, and an appointment with a realtor. They were finally “home”.
Doug bought a Canon Power Shot A40, with a whopping two mega pixels and a waterproof housing. This is the camera he used for all of his underwater pictures. Doug snorkeled nearly every morning, camera strapped over his shoulder taking photos. His pictures became better and better, and some were printed in West Hawaii Today. When encouraged to sell his prints, Doug's reaction was “That would be a job, and I do this for fun." Doug's wife Bonnie contributed Doug's incredible historical collection to Dear Ocean's Digital Coral Ark in 2023 and shared that he would be honored to know that his pictures are still being enjoyed.

Anke Roberts
HANAUMA BAY
After a career in the tech industry, Anke took early retirement in 2014 from Cisco Systems, Inc. where she was a Business Operations Manager for a large IT department. Long hours at her desk made her long for fresh air and sunlight, and to be near or in the ocean. SCUBA certified in 2001, Anke wanted to learn more about the many near-shore ocean critters of Hawaiʻi and trained as a docent with Hanauma Bay’s Sea Grant Education Program. To test her new knowledge, she grabbed fins and snorkel multiple times a week and explored the inner and outer reefs of Hanauma Bay. But to truly memorize the creatures she encountered under water, she took up underwater photography and has a library of over 12,000 photos taken at Hanauma Bay alone, in addition to the 3,000 photos she shot for the Coral Colony Temporal Texture Study (CCTT) between 2020 and 2023.
Anke grew up in Germany, far away from any large body of water, but she inherited her love of swimming and any water-related activities from her dad, who taught her to swim as a toddler and encouraged her to join her school swim club in first grade. Anke and her husband, Glenn, have lived on Oʻahu since 2008. They are both members of Ocean Defenders Alliance (ODA), a group of advanced divers who conduct regular underwater clean-up dives. Anke also spent several years as the outreach coordinator for Friends of Hanauma Bay, conducting special projects like the CCTT and documenting the first coral restoration project at Hanauma Bay.
